Stockholm Tickets for Public Transport: SL Fares, Travelcards & Prices

Most people searching for “tickets Stockholm” need fares for the metro, buses, trams, commuter trains and ferries. The whole network runs on the SL tariff (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) – one ticket covers every mode across the region. Below you find the ticket types with prices and validity, where to buy them, how the airport transfer works and how transport tickets differ from attraction tickets and the Stockholm Pass.

SL ticket types and prices compared

Which modes of transport are included?

One SL ticket covers all of the following – no surcharge, no separate fares.

Tunnelbana (metro)

Three line families (green, red, blue) with a dense timetable. The blue line stations are an attraction in themselves.

Buses

Blue trunk buses on the main corridors, red regional buses to the suburbs. You cannot pay on board – buy before you ride.

Trams (Spårväg City, Tvärbanan)

Line 7 runs from the centre to Djurgården for the Vasa Museum, Skansen and ABBA The Museum.

Pendeltåg (commuter rail)

Regional trains to Södertälje, Märsta and Nynäshamn – and to Arlanda Airport, where an extra station fee applies.

Pendelbåt (ferries)

SL ferries such as line 82 Slussen–Djurgården are included. Archipelago cruises by Waxholmsbolaget or Strömma are not.

How to buy SL tickets: app, contactless, machines

Stockholm transport is cashless. You cannot buy a ticket on a bus or ferry – get it before boarding.

  1. 1. SL app (recommended)

The free “SL – Journey planner and tickets” app sells every ticket type with credit or debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The ticket is activated after purchase and scanned as a QR code at the gate or reader.

  2. 2. Contactless card or phone

Tap a contactless card or phone on the blue reader at gates, on buses and on ferries. A single-journey fare is charged automatically – convenient, but without travelcard savings.

  3. 3. Machines and retailers

Ticket machines are in nearly every metro station; Pressbyrån and 7-Eleven stores also sell tickets and the reloadable SL Access card (about 20 SEK once).

  4. 4. Activate and expect checks

Travelcards start at the first check-in, not at purchase. Inspections are frequent and travelling without a valid ticket costs a penalty fare of roughly 1,500 SEK.

Getting from Arlanda Airport into the city

Arlanda sits outside the regular SL area: the airport railway station is privately operated, so a station fee is charged on top of the SL ticket.

Frequently asked questions about tickets in Stockholm

How much is a metro ticket in Stockholm?

A single journey costs around 42 SEK and is valid for 75 minutes including transfers on metro, bus, tram, commuter train and SL ferries. The reduced fare is about 28 SEK.

Is a 24-hour or 72-hour Stockholm travelcard worth it?

The 24-hour ticket at around 175 SEK equals roughly four single fares. More than four rides a day makes the travelcard cheaper; the 72-hour ticket pays off from about eight rides in three days.

Can I buy SL tickets with a credit card?

Yes. The SL app accepts credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay. For single journeys you can also tap contactless at the reader. Cash is not accepted on board.

Are ferries included in the SL ticket?

SL commuter ferries such as Slussen–Djurgården are included. Archipelago cruises by Strömma or Waxholmsbolaget need their own ticket, which you can compare here.

Is my SL ticket valid to Arlanda Airport?

Commuter trains reach Arlanda, but a station fee of roughly 140 SEK applies on top of the SL ticket. The Arlanda Express is not part of the SL tariff.

Do children need their own ticket?

Children under 7 travel free with a paying passenger. Ages 7 to 19 pay the reduced fare.
